Built between 1896 and 1906 by the British, the Cellular Jail was designed for solitary confinement. Each cell measured about 4.5 x 2.7 meters and was isolated to prevent prisoners from communicating with each other—hence the name “Cellular.” The prison once had seven wings and over 600 cells, all radiating from a central tower used by guards for surveillance.
The jail housed prominent Indian revolutionaries like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla, who were subjected to severe torture and inhumane conditions. Prisoners were forced into hard labor, often in chains, under brutal overseers.
Today, the Cellular Jail stands preserved as a symbol of resilience and patriotism. The museum and galleries inside showcase the valiant efforts of India’s heroes. The evening light and sound show, narrated with immersive effects and historical storytelling, brings the place to life for visitors.
